If someone in your area needs a plumber, electrician, or gas engineer right now, they don't scroll websites. They Google, and they call the top 2-3 results in the Local 3-pack — the map listings at the top of the search page.
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is what gets you into that box. It's free, it's the single highest-ROI channel available to a trade business, and most tradespeople still haven't set it up properly. Here's exactly how to do it — and how to turn it into booked jobs.
Why Google Business Profile Matters for Trades
Local search is where trade customers are. "Emergency plumber near me", "electrician [your town]", "gas engineer emergency" — these are high-intent searches from people who need a job done today.
A properly optimised GBP gets you in front of that customer at the exact moment they're ready to book. Cost: £0. The plumbers and electricians who show up in the 3-pack get the calls. Everyone else waits for word-of-mouth.
Key stat: The top 3 local results capture the vast majority of local search clicks. If you're not verified and optimised, those calls go to whoever is.
Step 1: Claim and Verify Your Profile
- Go to business.google.com and sign in with the Google account you use for your business.
- Search for your business by name and address. If it already exists (Google may have auto-created it), click Claim this business. If not, click Add your business.
- Fill in your name, category, and address. Use your real address — Google verifies it.
- Complete verification. Google usually posts a postcard with a code to your business address (2-5 days), or offers phone/email verification for some businesses.
- Enter the code and you're live.
Do not skip verification. Until you verify, your profile won't rank and you can't respond to reviews.
Step 2: Fill Every Field
A half-empty profile looks unprofessional and ranks worse. Fill in everything:
- Categories — choose the most specific one ("Plumber" not "Home services"). You can add a secondary one.
- Services — list the jobs you actually do (emergency call-outs, boiler repairs, re-wires, etc.).
- Service areas — the postcodes/towns you cover. This is critical for ranking in your area.
- Hours — be honest, especially if you offer 24/7 emergency cover.
- Phone number — your local or mobile number, not a call centre.
- Website link — point it to your site or a booking page.
- Photos — add at least 10: your van, your work, your team, before/after shots.
Step 3: Get Reviews (This Is the Growth Lever)
Reviews are the #1 ranking factor in local search. A business with 40 reviews outranks a business with 4, even on identical services.
- Send a Google review link to every happy customer — ideally the same day, while the job is fresh.
- Ask in person at the end of a job: "If you're happy, a quick Google review would really help my small business."
- Never offer payment for reviews — Google removes fake/incentivised reviews.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative. A thoughtful reply to a negative review builds more trust than deleting it.
Step 4: Post Weekly
Google rewards active profiles. Post once a week — a completed job photo, a seasonal tip ("get your boiler checked before winter"), a special offer. Each post keeps your profile fresh in the algorithm and in front of customers.
Step 5: Track the Calls — Don't Miss Them
Here's the part most tradespeople get wrong. A great GBP drives more calls. But if you're on a job when the phone rings, that lead goes to voicemail — and most callers don't leave one.
Your Google listing can be your biggest lead source and your biggest leak. If a customer calls the number on your profile and you don't answer, they call the next listing in the 3-pack. The job's gone.
This is where a missed call text-back system changes everything: the second you miss a call, the customer gets an instant text with a link to book themselves in — even while you're elbow-deep in a job. Read more in our complete lead generation guide.
The trap: Google sends you leads, you miss the calls, and you never know. The traffic is there — the response is the difference between a booked job and a lost one.

How much does a Google Business Profile cost?
It's completely free. Google doesn't charge to list your business. The only cost is your time to set it up and keep it active.
Do I need a physical address to verify?
Yes — Google requires an address to verify your business. If you work from home, you can hide your address from the public and just show your service area.
How long does verification take?
Postcard verification takes 2-5 working days to arrive. Phone and email verification, where available, are instant.
What if I can't answer calls from my profile?
Then you're paying to drive leads straight to voicemail. A missed call text-back system catches those calls instantly — worth doing before you push your ranking up.
